Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge

The Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge (ABBC) who were recently named the 2017 EPA Climate Leadership Award for Innovative Partnerships, held their first 2017 Steering Committee meeting at the Southface Campus. Input from a wide variety of experts from across the country, including TerraCycle founder Tom Szaky, Healthy Design expert Matt Finn, and numerous representatives form Atlanta's 5 largest neighborhood organizations, helped generate compelling ideas for the future of ABBC.

Congratulations to Matt Finn, who was just named the 2016 HCD 10 Researcher by Healthcare Design magazine! The HCD 10 is an elite group of design and architecture professionals who represent the most exciting, inspirational, and influential healthcare work of the previous year. Matt is the first practicing architect to be awarded the distinction of being named the HCD 10 Researcher in the award's history.

Health and Design Practitioner Workshop

The Green Health Partnership organizes an extraordinary workshop at the CDC's Roybal Campus in Atlanta, GA. As part of a series of workshops across the U.S., the GHP is seeking to address the challenge that human health is inextricably tied to where we live, learn, work, and play. Matt Finn was honored to provide input as a practicing architect, in the diverse group of participants ranging from nutrition scientists, public health officials from the CDC to a representative from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Addressing Childhood Obesity in America

Katie Janson and Matt Finn present their research on how design can impact childhood obesity in America to Perkins+Will, who generously funded their work on this topic through the company’s Innovation Incubator program. Katie and Matt’s collaboration is part of a joint venture with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Collaborative of Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR).

Facility Design Support for Mental Health

Facility Care magazine hosts a 90-minute webinar led by architect Matt Finn on design and acoustics in mental healthcare facilities. The presentation included in-depth input from co-presenter Susan B. Wesley (PhD in music therapy), and contributors Jessica Clements (Acoustical Engineer), Edward Vega (PhD in psychology), and Clint McMahan (USMC Veteran).

He and his team (Clint McMahan, Edward Vega, Marat Zanov) have discovered how architecture can facilitate the therapy for veterans with PTSD. Post-traumatic Understanding: The Connections Between Environmental Design and Posttraumatic Stress

At the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention 2015, Matt Finn leads a presentation on his collaborative and original research on designing for veterans for the U.S. Armed Forced with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Contributors included co-presenters Edward Vega, PhD in Psychology and Acting Director of the Trauma Recovery Program at the Atlanta Department of Veterans Affairs and Clint McMahan, Veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

White Paper: Posttraumatic Understanding

Matt Finn releases a white paper describing his original research methods and process for collaborating with experts in psychology, human factors, military techniques, and research methodology to study how to design for complex issues through a case study on Veteran Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
